The “House Critters” Thanksgiving Morning
Blue Booby
woke up startled; because he had the covers flopped over him. The human they
called Bob had gotten up while it was still dark out. Blue decided to see what
he was up to, so he followed him to the kitchen.
Blue hopped
up on a chair then onto the table so he could watch what was going on. He had
to do this because he was a flightless bird, so he walked and hopped a lot like
a penguin. Bob opened the refrigerator, took out a turkey and put it in the big
side of the sink. He walked over to the stove and turned on the oven, mumbled
something about preheating, then went back to the turkey.
Blue decided
the rest of the house critters would like to see what happened next, so he went
to get them up. Henrietta Bobbie Bunny was the eldest of the critters and she was
not happy with his decision, but as she was now awake they found Ducky Duck,
Rainy Reindeer, and Big Bunny and woke them up. They all went out to the
kitchen and got up on the table just in time to see Bob try to get the covering
off of the turkey. He tried to rip it with his hands, which did not work and
the big bird just slid around in the sink. The critters thought this was funny,
but did not make very much noise as they wanted to stay and see what happened
next. Well next was a knife which did not seem to cut the thick plastic wrap on
the bird, but which Bob did use to puncture it in a couple of places. This
turned into him ripping the bag off the bird, but as this had been a frozen
turkey lots of liquid came flowing out of the rips all over the sink and Bob.
He cleaned up and reached into the bird at both ends to remove some things that
were still frozen, which he placed in a plastic bag and put in the garbage. This
is when the critters could not keep still; he started to give the dead bird a
bath. Bob ran water all over it, inside it, and even pulled out the wings along
with the legs to make sure all the parts got rinsed. He patted it dry, used at
least 50 paper towels, according to the critters, then pushed pads of butter
under the skin of the breasts and put the bird in the oven.
He thought there were more pads of butter to put on the bird, but guessed he must not have counted them correctly and as it was still dark outside he went back to bed. If he had seen the critters he would have known where the rest of the butter pads went, they all had some on their faces!
